Habitat: Marshes

  • Small, rust-colored rail with barred pattern underneath, and a gray patch on its cheeks. Its long, slender bill is slightly curved.
  • To avoid predators, the Virginia Rail can swim under water propelling itself with its wings.
  • All of Michigan is included in its North American breeding grounds. This secretive bird is more often heard than seen and often builds “dummy” nests.
