Habitat: Beaches, mud flats, marshes, streams, ponds.

  • Greater Yellowlegs, a long-legged sandpiper, measures 13 to 15 inches in length. Very similar to Lesser Yellowlegs, which is smaller.
  • A long neck and bright yellow legs characterize this shorebird, which is commonly seen feeding in shallow waters during spring and fall migration.
  • Yellowlegs arrive in Michigan in April on their way to Canadian nesting grounds, and return again in July and August on their way south.
