Habitat: Suburbs, orchards, shade trees and woods.

  • Black-and-white barred wings characterize this common Michigan woodpecker.
  • Males have a red notch on the backs of their heads.
  • Similar to the hairy woodpecker, the downy is smaller, with a short slender bill and barred outer tail feathers.
