Habitat: Marshes, grassy ponds, slow-flowing streams.

  • This small, dabbling duck is about half the size of a mallard. It often flies in swift-moving, compact flocks.
  • Distinguished by its large blue wing patch and also by a white crescent in front of its eyes.
  • Blue-winged Teals arrive at nesting grounds in the Great Lakes region in May. While some spend the winter in the southern U.S., the majority fly as far as South America.
