Habitat: Rivers, ponds, lakes.

• This distinctive bird often flies above water then appears to hang suspended in midflight as it watches for fish. When it spies its prey, the Kingfisher dives straight into the water, often emerging with a fish.
• Both males and females have head crests, and blue-gray bodies with white underneath. Males have a bluish band across their chest. Females also have a rust-colored band.
• Kingfishers arrive in the spring as soon as open water permits fishing.
