Large dead zones predicted for Gulf, Chesapeake Bay
Record-setting "dead zones" in the Gulf of Mexico and Chesapeake Bay appear likely this summer, according to new forecasts from a University of Michigan researcher. Donald Scavia, a professor at the U-M School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE), makes the annual forecasts using models driven by nutrient load estimates from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Manistee Municipal Marina in Manistee, Michigan, and Charlevoix City Marina in Charlevoix, Michigan are the most recent facilities to achieve official designation as Michigan Clean Marinas. The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition is launching a 13-city boat tour today in Buffalo, N.Y., to highlight the need to restore the Great Lakes and to urge the U.S. Congress and presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama to act to restore the lakes. NOAA Reminds Beachgoers That Rip Currents Can Be a Threat
Rip Current Awareness Week Is June 1-7, 2008
Heading to the beach for summer vacation? NOAA is urging beachgoers to learn how to “Break the Grip” of rip currents before getting into the water. Rip currents are a potentially deadly threat – accounting for more than 80 percent of lifeguard beach rescues. Read full story

Michigan Boating Industries Association Offers FREE Boating Publication and Boating Safety Information
Two Michigan Sea Grant publications are included in a Boating Safety Information Kit being offered free to the public, while supplies last, by the Michigan Boating Industries Association. Break the Grip of the Rip provides information on escaping rip currents, and Don’t Get Trapped tells boaters how to recognize and avoid commercial fishing trap nets. Read full story

Guidelines for Handling Birds With Suspected Cases of Botulism Announced
The Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with the Michigan Departments of Agriculture and Community Health and the Michigan Sea Grant Extension, today announced a series of protocols to provide the public with information on how to handle birds suspected of dying from Type E botulism. Unwanted Medicine: Michigan Workshop to Assist Communities, Pharmacies in Safe Disposal of Unused Medicine
Traces of prescription drugs and other medicines detected in drinking water are becoming a growing environmental and public safety concern nationwide. One recent study conducted by the Associated Press found small amounts of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines like ibuprofen and acetaminophen in drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas. Dead zones have a negative impact on fishing industries
Dr. Don Scavia, Michigan Sea Grant Director, speaks with David Fair, host of WEMUs radio show Issues of the Environment about "Dead zones" in our Great Lakes. Scavia explains that dead zones are areas in lakes or oceans without oxygen and that support no plant or animal life. The U.S. Farm Bill may be renegotiated to better protect commercial and recreational fishing industries. Listen to interview
