Researchers to study why dead zone returned to Lake Erie
A $2.5 million grant will fund a 5-year study examining why dead zones have returned to Lake Erie, and researchers hope the findings will allow them to detect the cause and stop the spread before the fishery and tourism industries suffer.

Status and trends for the Detroit River and Western Lake Erie
The State of the Strait Conference will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2006, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Flat Rock Community Center, in Flat Rock, Michigan. First-Ever Great Lakes-Wide Dunes Conference to Consider Collaboration and Management Strategies
For the first time, researchers, educators and resource managers from eight states and Ontario, Canada, will gather October 2-4, 2006, in Traverse City, Michigan, to discuss Great Lakes sand dunes needs, to begin developing a basin wide strategy for environmentally responsible dunes management, and to consider forming a Great Lakes Sand Dunes Ecosystem Coalition. Too Close For Comfort; Hydrilla Hunting Now Urgent
The invasive plant Hydrilla verticillata has been confirmed in a lake less than an hour’s drive from Michigan. As a result, Michigan Sea Grant is encouraging waterfront property owners, as well as boaters, anglers and swimmers, to search the state’s inland lakes to make sure it hasn’t infested bodies of water in Michigan. Great Lakes Family Fun and Science Activity Night: Enjoy Songs, Music and Science
Join us Tuesday, July 25, for Great Lakes Family Fun and Science Activity Night – a summer evening celebration of the Great Lakes with songs and music by Mustard's Retreat, a short slide show of the beautiful Great Lakes, and several science activities for preschool through eighth grade. Among them will be a video microscope with microscopic animals on slides, a coloring station, and small fish, insects and mud samples to examine – and don't forget to stop by and see the live lamprey tank in the Library lobby.
